The fifth and final stage of the O-Ring uses a chase start, meaning that the runners start based on their combined placing after the first four stages. For most classes (DH13-14, DH17-20 short, DH21-70 short, DH75-95, DH15-70, DH18E-DH21E), the runners are placed in the starting line in order of race, with the leader starting first and the others at a time interval corresponding to their placing. Whoever crosses the finish line first wins the entire race, so the weekly total is decided directly at the finish line.

The chase start was introduced at the beginning of the race in 1965 and it is the model that has been used since then: the runner who crosses the finish line first, regardless of time, wins the O-Ring. Before each start on the final stage, participants in the chase start classes receive a new number tag with a starting number corresponding to their combined placing.
